I grew up just outside of Pittsburgh and spent my weekends exploring the ins and outs of this stunning city.  Although there are many neighborhoods suitable to stay, these are the top 5 areas of Pittsburgh that I recommend to stay –  Downtown, Mount Washington, the Strip District, North Shore and Squirrel Hill.

Stay in Downtown Pittsburgh if you like skyscrapers and being in the heart of the city.  There are a mix of steakhouses and trendy restaurants.  Market Square is a great place to wander and explore.  Perfect for the history buffs and if you are in town to attend specific events.

Things to do in Downtown Pittsburgh:

  • Cycle around at Point State Park.
  • Check out the exhibits on local history at Fort Pitt Museum.
  • Explore Market Square.
  • Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the business district surrounded by sky scrapers.
  • Catch a hockey game at the Penguins Arena.

Mount Washington is a charming area known for its panoramic city views.  Stay here for upscale seafood and Italian restaurants along Grandview Avenue’s Restaurant Row.  The Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines are iconic Pittsburgh staples and a must experience for anyones first time to the city.
