Tipping in Guatemala

Do you tip in Guatemala?  Before we get started with the best restaurants in Antigua list, let’s talk about tipping in Guatemala.  Tips or propina in Spanish is normally 10% in restaurants.

Propinas are usually added onto the bill which I love because it just makes things so much easier.  If a tip is not included on the bill and you would like to add one, you must tell the cashier/waiter before they run your card to add a tip or simply leave some quetzals on the table.

Indonesian Curry in Antigua Guatemala

Toku Baru

This restaurant in Antigua has a lot of personality.  Not only is Taku Baru’s menu a mix of Indian, Indonesian and Mayan food but the place is decorated in classic pop bands memorabilia.  I’m talking bands like the Beatles, the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.  The music also matched the decor.

I opted for the Indonesian Kare Curry made with coconut milk and lemon grass.  Joe tried the Madras which was a spicy Indian curry.  All curries were served with sautéed spinach, rice and a side salad.

Portions were huge and some of the cheapest prices we’ve seen in town.  This is definitely one of the best places to eat in Antigua on a budget.  Cash and credit cards are accepted.
