Istanbul to Cappadocia by Train & Bus

There is no direct train from Istanbul to Cappadocia but instead, traveling from Istanbul to Cappadocia by train involves a combination of high-speed rail and bus services, offering a scenic journey. High speed trains in Turkey are modern and comfortable, featuring amenities such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, and food service.

Long-distance buses in Turkey are generally comfortable, with semi-reclining seats, air conditioning, onboard entertainment, and even a beverage and snack cart. Here are the possible routes – High Speed Train line from Istanbul to Ankara or Konya.

Istanbul to Ankara by Train: The majority of trains arrive at the Ankara Gar train station, located in the city’s center, from Istanbul Söğütlüçeşme train station, which is in the city center, or Pendik station, which is just outside the city.

Both Istanbul train stations are located on the Asian side of Istanbul. The journey takes about 4-5 hours with multiple departs through the day. There’s even a sleeper train that leaves at night and takes about 8 hours.

After arriving in Ankara, you can take a bus from Ankara’s main bus station (AŞTİ) to Nevşehir or Göreme in Cappadocia. The bus ride from Ankara to Cappadocia takes 4-5 hours.

Istanbul to Konya by Train: Alternatively, you can take a high-speed train from Istanbul to Konya, which takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. From Konya, you can take a bus directly to Nevşehir, which also takes about 3-4 hours.

Book your train tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Tickets can be purchased online through the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) website or at the station.

It’s also pertinent to arrive at the station 20-30 minutes before departure as you will go through luggage and ticket inspection before you board. Bus tickets can be booked in advance through various online platforms like BusBud or directly at the bus station.

The advantages of choosing this route to get to Cappadocia from Istanbul is the scenery and cost. Not only will you get to view the beautiful country side, but traveling by train and bus can be more economical compared to flying, especially if you book in advance.

The combined train journey and bus will take longer (about 8-10 hours in total journey time), so this option is ideal for travelers who enjoy slower-paced travel and have the time to explore.

The cost of a bus ticket range from $15-$30, depending on the company and the type of service (standard or luxury). Long-distance buses in Turkey are generally well-equipped with comfortable seating, air-conditioning, onboard restrooms, and sometimes Wi-Fi.

Book your tickets in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or holidays. Overnight buses are a popular option, allowing you to save on accommodation costs and arrive in Cappadocia early in the morning.

I’d also like to note that Turkey does not have sleeper buses. Not to confuse this with overnight buses, which they have, the seats just don’t recline far, which I unfortunately learned the hard way as we traveled on an overnight bus from Cappadocia to Pamukkale but I’ll save that story for another post.

If you’re renting a car, you can rent a rental car at the Istanbul airport or, I recommend renting through LocalRent. LocalRent is sort of like Turo in the United States, you are able to rent local vehicles for a good price and the best part is, they’ll drop and pick up the vehicle anywhere in the city.

This way you can spend a few days exploring Istanbul and it will save you an extra trip back to the airport, the stress and anxiety of having to find a parking space in the city and save you some money.

Turkish highways are generally in good condition, with clear signage and well-maintained surfaces.
