Everybody has different priorities when it comes to transportation options and traveling around a foreign country for the first time. My top priorities are to get somewhere safely, swiftly, and for a good price. But if there’s a unique transportation that I can take, I’m willing to splurge.
The transportation through Turkey is sometimes grueling, sweaty, and long but it is well connected throughout the country. Flights are affordable and no matter what mode of transportation you choose, you will be able to explore the country with ease.
No matter which route you choose, getting from Istanbul to Izmir is easy, scenic, and full of adventure – connecting Turkey’s cultural capital with one of the most beautiful coastal cities.
Istanbul to Izmir by Plane
Flying is by far the fastest and most convenient way to travel from Istanbul to Izmir or in reverse from Izmir to Istanbul. With dozens of daily nonstop flights, it’s easy to fit into any itinerary – and often surprisingly affordable.
The flight takes just about 1 hour, making it perfect for travelers short on time or connecting to other destinations along Turkey’s Aegean coast. I personally flew from Izmir to Istanbul when I traveled between the two cities. It was quick, affordable, painless, and even enjoyable.
You can fly from either Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side or Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. Both airports offer frequent services to Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB), located about 10 miles (17 kilometers) south of Izmir’s city center.
Major airlines like Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and SunExpress operate daily flights this route, with prices typically ranging from $30-$70 USD one-way depending on the season, how early you book, and if you have a carry-on bag or check your luggage.
Once you land in at Izmir airport, it’s easy to reach the city center. The IZBAN commuter train connects the airport directly to downtown in about 30 minutes, or you can take a Havaş airport shuttle or taxi for around ₺150-₺250 TRY (about $5-$8 USD).
🧳 Travel Tip: If you’re connecting through Istanbul from abroad, book your domestic flight as part of the same ticket – it’s usually cheaper and ensures your luggage transfers automatically.
Istanbul to Izmir Train
Taking the train from Istanbul to Izmir is a slower but scenic way to see the Turkish countryside – ideal for travelers who prefer comfort and a more local experience. There’s no direct high-speed train between the two cities, but you can still make the journey by combining a high-speed train (YHT) and a regional connection.
The most common route is to take the high-speed train from Istanbul to Eskişehir, then transfer to the Izmir Blue Train (Mavi Tren), continue south to Izmir’s Basmane Station.
The full journey takes around 9-10 hours total, including transfer time. Trains are modern, comfortable, and air-conditioned with food service and reserved seating available.
- Step 1: Depart from Istanbul Söğütlüçeşme or Pendik Station on the Asian side to Eskişehir (about 3 hours).
- Step 2: From Eskişehir, board the Izmir Blue Train to Izmir Basmane Station (about 6 hours).
Train tickets can be booked through TCDD Tasimacilik, Turkey’s national railway website, or at the station. Prices vary depending on class and availability but generally range from ₺400-₺700 TRY ($12-$22 USD) for the full trip.
Bring snacks, water, and entertainment – while the ride is long, it’c comfortable and offers scenic views of small towns, farmland, and mountain valleys along the way. If you’re not in a rush, the train is a relaxing and authentic way to travel from Istanbul to Izmir.
Istanbul to Izmir By Bus
Taking the bus from Istanbul to Izmir is one of the most affordable and convenient ways to travel between the two cities. Modern long-distance buses in Turkey are clean, reliable, and sorta comfortable.
The direct bus journey takes around 7 to 9 hours, depending on traffic and your departure point, and runs both day and night. Several major bus companies operate on this travel route, including Kamil Koc, Metro Truism, Pamukkale, and Varan, with departures on a daily basis.
Buses leave from Istanbul’s main terminals – Esenler Otogar (European side) or Alibeyköy Otogar and Dudullu Otogar(Asian side) – and arrive at Izmir Otogar, located about 15 minutes north of the city center.
Bus tickets usually cost between ₺400-₺700 TRY ($12-$22 USD), depending on on the company, class, and time of day. You can easily book online through Obilet.com, Busbud, or the company’s official website.
If you choose a night bus – you’ll save on a night’s accommodation and but I don’t recommend it. Joe and I took a night bus from Cappadocia to Pamukkale and it was awful, so I’m speaking from experience.
It was very unenjoyable because Turkey does not have lay down seats on buses, even if you book your ticket for an overnight bus. You’ll be sitting upright all through the night.
That’s what happened to us and it was rough let me tell you. However, if you do choose this route, bring a light jacket or scarf since bus air conditioning can be chilly.
By Car
If you love flexibility and scenic drives, traveling from Istanbul to Izmir by car is a fantastic way to see more of Turkey at your own pace. The two cities are about 300 miles (480 kilometers) apart, and the drive takes roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on traffic and where you start in Istanbul.
The fastest and easiest route is via the O-5 toll motorway, a modern highway that connects Istanbul to Izmir through Bursa and Balikesir. You’ll cross the impressive Osman Gazi Bridge – one of the longest suspension bridges in the world – and enjoy views of rolling hills, farmland, and the Marmara Sea. Expect to pay around ₺500–₺700 TRY ($15-$25 USD) in tolls and bridge fees for a one-way trip.
If you’d prefer a more of a scenic route, consider taking a detour through Çanakkale or Ayvalik along the Aegean coast. These coastal towns are perfect for a short stop or overnight stay, offering charming harbors, local seafood, and relaxed Mediterranean vibes.
Car rentals are easy to find in Istanbul, with major companies like Avis, Enterprise, and Europcar offering daily rates starting around ₺1,000 TRY ($30 USD) plus fuel and tolls. Make sure to have a valid driver’s license, passport, and International Driving Permit (IDP) if required.
Turkish roads are generally in excellent condition, but always have cash or credit card for tolls, and watch your speed – speed cameras are common on the O-5. Once you reach Izmir, parking is straight forward, and most hotels or city lots are inexpensive.

For the most comfortable and stress-free way to travel between the two cities, consider booking a private transfer from Istanbul to Izmir. This option is perfect for families, small groups, or anyone who prefers convenience and door-to-door service without the hassle of navigating airports or public transportation.
Private transfers typically use modern air-conditioned vehicles and include professional driver who picks you up directly from your hotel or Airbnb in Istanbul and drops you off at your accommodation in Izmir.
The journey takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic, and can be customized with your sightseeing stops along the way – such as Bursa, Pergamon, or Ayvalik. Some hidden gems that many travelers skip.
Prices vary depending on the company and vehicle type but usually range between $250-$400 USD per car, which can be cost effective if you’re traveling as a group. You can book through reputable platforms like GetYourGuide, Viator, or local Turkish operators offering intercity transfers.
When booking, confirm whether tolls and fuel are included in the price, and always choose a licensed company with strong reviews for safety and reliability.
On a Guided Tour

Tours are ideal for travelers short on time or those who want to see more of Turkey’s highlights without worrying about transportation, tickets, or hotel bookings.
Many multi-day tours include not just Izmir, but also famous nearby attractions like Ephesus, Pamukkale, Kuşadasi, and Pergamon, giving you a well-rounded taste of western Turkey.
You can choose from small-group tours, private itineraries, or multi-day packages that start in Istanbul and end in Izmir. These tours typically include hotel stays, professional guides, entrance fees, and comfortable transportation- sometimes even domestic flights.
