Taking a surf lesson is one of the best ways to experience Maui. The best Maui surfing lessons teach you more than how to stand on a board—you’ll also learn how to paddle, catch a wave, stay safe and follow basic surf etiquette.
My first time surfing was at Breakwall in Lahaina, where my husband, Joe, taught me. I’m still an occasional surfer, so I remember how intimidating those first waves can feel.
Today, I recommend Kīhei or Lahaina for most beginners or Kāʻanapali during calmer summer conditions.
In this guide, I’ll cover the best places to learn, what to expect from a lesson and helpful tips for first-time surfers.

Best Maui Surf Lessons at a Glance
✋ Short on time? These are the best surf lessons to check out before your Maui vacation.
Kīhei is my top recommendation for most first-time surfers. Several established surf schools teach around Kalama Park, where conditions are often suitable for beginners.
Kāʻanapali is another convenient option for travelers staying in West Maui, particularly when the summer surf is calm.
I also recommend Lahaina for beginner surf lessons, especially at Breakwall, where the mellow waves and protected conditions have long made it one of West Maui’s best places to learn.
- Best overall for beginners: Group surf lesson in Kīhei
- Best beginner break in Lahaina: Breakwall surf lesson
- Best personalized experience: Private surf lesson in Kīhei
- Best for Kāʻanapali visitors: Group surf lesson in Kāʻanapali
- Best women-led surf school: Maui Surfer Girls
Surf conditions can change daily, so a reputable instructor may adjust the location or postpone a lesson when the ocean is unsafe. That is a good sign – not an inconvenience.
Why Trust This Maui Surf Lessons Guide?
I lived on Maui for nearly 14 years and learned to surf at Breakwall in Lahaina. I’m still an occasional surfer, so I understand the questions and nerves that come with paddling out for the first time.
My husband, Joe, previously worked as a Maui surf instructor, was sponsored by Volcom and lived on Oahu’s North Shore across from Pipeline. I think it’s safe to say that he has mastered the art of surfing.
I’ve combined my beginner’s perspective with his experience to provide practical advice about choosing a lesson, staying safe, learning proper surfing technique and respecting surf etiquette.
Best Maui Surf Lessons for Beginners
1. Two-Hour Beginner Group Surf Lesson in Kīhei – Best Overall
- 👉 Best for: First-time surfers, solo travelers and budget-conscious beginners
- ⏰ Duration: Two hours
- 📍 Location: Kalama Park, Kīhei
- 🌊 Lesson type: Small class sizes, with up to six students
For most first-time surfers, my top choice is a small-group lesson in Kīhei. Beginner surf lessons take place around Kalama Park, one of Maui’s most popular areas for beginners, and groups are limited to six students.
The two-hour experience begins with instruction on land, where you’ll learn ocean safety, surf etiquette, paddling and how to stand on the board. Once you enter the water, your instructor will help you choose waves and position the board so you have the best chance of getting up.
A surfboard, rash guard and instructor are included, making this an easy option for travelers who have never surfed before. If friends or family ask me where they should take their first Maui surf lesson today, Kīhei is usually where I send them.
After your lesson, use my guide to the best things to do in Kīhei to find nearby beaches, restaurants and other South Maui activities.

2. Private Surf Lesson in Kīhei – Best for Personalized Instruction
- 👉 Best for: Nervous beginners, children and travelers who want individual instruction
- ⏰ Duration: Two hours
- 📍 Location: Kalama Beach, Kīhei
- 🌊 Lesson type: Private
A private surf lesson is a great option if you want the instructor’s full attention. Private instruction can be adapted to different skill levels, whether you are stepping onto a surfboard for the first time or want to improve your paddling, balance and technique.
Private instruction also means less waiting between waves and more immediate feedback when something is not clicking.
I think the extra cost can be worth it for nervous beginners, young children or anyone who wants to make the most of a limited amount of time.
This two-hour private lesson takes place at Kalama Beach in Kīhei. A surfboard, rash guard and reef shoes are included.

3. Private Surf Lesson at Breakwall – Best Beginner Break in Lahaina
- 👉 Best for: Beginners staying in Lahaina or West Maui
- ⏰ Duration: Two hours
- 📍 Location: Breakwall, Lahaina
- 🌊 Lesson type: Private
Breakwall holds a special place in my heart because it is where my husband, Joe, first taught me to surf. The break is known for its smaller, mellow waves, making it one of the best places to learn how to surf in Lahaina.
This private two-hour lesson gives you the instructor’s full attention while you learn paddling, ocean safety, surf etiquette and how to catch your first wave. The surfboard, rash guard and water shoes are included, and you can continue practicing with the board after your lesson.
Although Breakwall is beginner-friendly, the ocean floor is shallow and rocky in places. This is one reason I recommend learning with an instructor who understands the break and current conditions.

4. Group Surf Lesson in Kāʻanapali – Best for West Maui Visitors
- 👉 Best for: Travelers staying in Kāʻanapali and West Maui
- ⏰ Duration: 90 minutes
- 📍 Location: Kāʻanapali Beach
- 🌊 Lesson type: Group
If you are staying in Kāʻanapali, taking a lesson directly from the beach saves you from driving to South Maui. The 90-minute lesson begins with instruction on land before you enter the water with one of the school’s certified instructors.
When comparing schools, look for instructors with years of experience teaching beginners in Maui’s changing ocean conditions. Group lessons are a fun option for couples, friends and families who want to learn together without paying for private instruction.
I recommend Kāʻanapali surf lessons primarily during the summer or when conditions are calm. West Maui can receive larger swells, especially during winter.
After your lesson, use my guide to the best things to do in Kāʻanapali to continue exploring West Maui.

5. Maui Surfer Girls – Best Women-Owned Surf School
- 👉 Best for: Travelers looking for a women-owned school, small groups and supportive instruction
- ⏰ Duration: Two hours
- 📍 Location: Ukumehame Beach Park
- 🌊 Lesson type: Group, semi-private, private and family lessons
Founded by Maui surfer Dustin Tester in 2001, Maui Surfer Girls is a women-owned surf school that welcomes women, men and children. The company offers group, semi-private, private and family surf lessons in a supportive, noncompetitive environment.
Lessons take place at Ukumehame Beach Park on Maui’s west side, about 20 minutes from Kīhei, Kāʻanapali and Wailuku. Maui Surfer Girls is one of the permitted surf schools at this location, which can make it feel less crowded than Maui’s busiest beginner breaks.
Group lessons last two hours and maintain a maximum ratio of four students per instructor. The smaller class size is helpful if you want more individual feedback without booking a fully private lesson.

How to Choose a Maui Surf Lesson
The best Maui surf lesson depends on where you are staying, your budget and how much individual attention you want.
Group, Semi-Private vs. Private Surf Lessons
Group surf lessons are the most affordable option and work well for most first-time surfers. You will share an instructor, but beginner groups are typically kept small enough for everyone to receive guidance in the water.
Semi-private surf lessons offer a balance between cost and personalized instruction. These semi-private lessons are a good choice for couples, friends or families who want to learn together with fewer students. Some companies refer to this option as a private group lesson because only your party participates.
A private lesson is worth considering if you are nervous, traveling with a young child or serious about improving quickly. You will receive one-on-one feedback, distraction free personal attention, and spend less time waiting for your turn.
Always Take a Lesson as a Beginner
Even if you are athletic or comfortable in the ocean, I still recommend taking a lesson your first time. Surfing involves more than standing on a board.
A good instructor will teach you how to read the waves, handle the board safely and follow surf etiquette before you enter a busy lineup.
What to Expect During Your First Maui Surf Lesson
Most Maui surf lessons last between 90 minutes and two hours. Your surf lesson experience will usually begin on land with instruction covering ocean safety, surf etiquette, and proper techniques like paddling and the correct way to stand on the board.
Once you enter the water, the instructor will help position your board, choose beginner-friendly waves and guide you through the timing of paddling and standing.
Do not expect to master everything immediately. Even standing for a few seconds on your first wave feels like a major accomplishment.
Surfboards and rash guards are generally included, while some schools also provide reef shoes. Most lessons use stable soft-top boards that make it easier for beginners to paddle, balance and catch smaller waves.
Maui Surfing Safety and Etiquette
Surfing is exciting, but the ocean deserves respect. Conditions can change quickly, and even beginner breaks may have shallow reef, currents or crowded lineups.
- Listen to your instructor: Experienced instructors understand the local break and will choose waves appropriate for your ability.
- Protect your head when you fall: Cover your head with your arms until you know where your board is.
- Never put the board between yourself and an incoming wave: The wave can push it back toward you.
- Do not stand on coral: If you fall in shallow water, try to land flat instead of putting your feet down.
- Maintain control of your board: Keep a safe distance from swimmers and other surfers.
- Learn who has the right of way: The surfer closest to the breaking part of the wave has priority.
- Do not paddle out alone as a beginner: Many Maui surf breaks are unsuitable for first-time surfers without an instructor.
Best Time of Year for Maui Surf Lessons
You can take surf lessons on Maui throughout the year, but wave conditions vary by location and season. Winter brings larger swells to Maui’s north and west-facing shores, while summer is generally calmer around Kāʻanapali.
Kīhei offers beginner-friendly conditions during much of the year, although south swells can occasionally create larger waves during summer. Breakwall in Lahaina is known for relatively consistent beginner waves, but conditions can change anywhere on the island.
Morning lessons often provide lighter winds and cleaner conditions, but the best waves for beginners depend on the day’s swell, wind and lesson location.

What to Wear and Bring to a Maui Surf Lesson
Maui’s warm water means you generally will not need a wetsuit, although a rash guard helps protect your skin from the sun and surfboard. Most surf schools provide the surfboard, rash guard and any other essential equipment. You should bring:
- A comfortable swimsuit that will stay secure in the waves
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- A towel and dry clothes
- Drinking water
- Sunglasses and a hat for after the lesson
- A waterproof camera or GoPro, if permitted
- Cash for gratuity
Apply reef-safe sunscreen before arriving so it has time to absorb, but avoid putting it on your hands immediately before the lesson because it can make the board slippery. Leave jewelry and other valuables at your accommodation or securely stored out of sight.
