About Pacaya Volcano

There are 37 volcanos in Guatemala. Volcán Pacaya is one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes, standing at 8,373 feet (2,552 meters). In fact it’s the second most active volcano behind Volcan Fuego.

After lying dormant for more than a century, it erupted in 1961 and has remained highly active ever since, with regular lava flows and steam vents shaping its rugged landscape. Because of this constant activity, Pacaya national park has become both a scientific curiosity and a travelers playground.

Unlike some of Guatemala’s taller more challenging peaks, Pacaya is easy to get to, making it one of the most popular volcano hikes in the country. Its combination of scenery, lava fields, and aliveness draws adventurers from Antigua, Guatemala City, and beyond.

How to Get to Pacaya Volcano

Reaching Pacaya is surprisingly easy, which is one of the reasons it’s one of the best hikes in Guatemala. Pacaya Volcano is located about an hour drive southwest of town, near the village of San Vicente Pacaya.

The simplest and most stress-free way to visit is by booking a guided tour from Antigua. Tours include round-trip transportation, park entrance fees, and a local guide who knows the safest routes and history.

You’ll find plenty of options through local agencies in Antigua, or you can reserve in advance online for extra convenience.

If you prefer to go independently, you can take a shuttle or hire a private driver to the Parque Nacional Volcan de Pacaya entrance. Just make sure the driver waits for you or that you have a shuttle arranged for the way back as well.

Joe and I made the mistake of ubering there and hoping there was a shuttle we could hop onto when we finished the hike. That did not happen and we waited in the parking lot entrance for hours until finally an uber picked us up.

Once there, you’ll still need to hire a local tour guide and pay for an entry ticket, which costs almost as much as an organized tour. In the end we only saved a few extra bucks doing the Volcán de Pacaya hike independently.

Another budget friendly option is to use public transportation and catch a chicken bus from Antigua to San Vicente Pacaya and then arrange a tuk-tuk or pickup truck to the trailhead. But keep in mind this route can be confusing and takes much longer.

This is what we almost had to resort to, but finally an uber made its way out there to pick us up. Thank goodness, I was tired after that hike! For most travelers, an organized tour is the most straightforward and time efficient way to experience the Pacaya Volcano hike.

What to Expect on the Volcano Pacaya Hike

The Pacaya Volcano hike begins at the national park entrance, where you’l meet your guide and start a steady uphill climb through pine forests and farmland. The trail is well marked but can be dusty and steep in sections, so expect a bit of a workout.

After about an hour, the scenery opens up, revealing sweeping views of the surrounding highlands and neighboring volcanoes like Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. On clear days, the views alone are worth the effort. It’s about 1,300 feet feet of elevation gain in total.

As you continue, the landscape shifts dramatically into a black, rocky expanse of lava fields. There’s even a spot where you can enter the vent and feel the steam radiating on your body. A reminder that Pacaya is still very much alive.

Many guides bring marshmallows for you to roast over the volcanic steam. There was even a man baking pizza a few meters down from its steam. Pizza’s cost more than $50 though.

You may even get to see glowing lava flows in the distance after sunset. The Pacaya Volcano hike usually finishes at a panoramic viewpoint of the most impressive volcanic landscapes before looping back down the trailhead. It’s about 2-3 hours in total round trip.

Pacaya Volcano Hike Without a Guide

Unfortunately you can not hike Volcán Pacaya without a guide. Trust me, I tried and ended up paying just as much as you would on a tour plus waited in the parking area for hours trying to catch a ride back to Antigua.

The best thing about going the way we did was that we hiked Volcan Pacaya without other tour groups. We basically had the volcano to ourselves. I still think your best bet is to go on a group tour.

    Pacaya Volcano Hike Difficulty

The Pacaya Volcano day hike is considered moderate, although I thought it was slightly difficult at times. It’s doable for most travelers with a reasonable level of fitness, but still requires a bit of physical exertion.

The trail isn’t overly long, just a few miles round trip, but the steady incline and uneven terrain can feel challenging at times, especially in the midday heat. Expect some huffing and puffing on the ascent, but nothing to extreme.

Walking sticks (rented at the trailhead for a few quetzals) make the climb a lot easier, and you can always opt for a horse if you’d rather skip the workout. In the end, the views of active lava fields and epic volcano panoramas more than make up for the effort.

    Tips to Hike Pacaya Volcano

    • 🌋 Pacaya Volcano Day Trip: A Sunrise and a sunset hike are the most popular. On these hikes you’ll get cooler temperatures and best lighting. Sunset tours often give you a chance to see glowing lava after dark if conditions are right.
    • 🥾 Crowds: Weekdays are best to visit Pacaya Volcano. Weekends are crowded with local tourists since it’s an easy day trip from Guatemala City.
    • 🎒 What to Pack: Wear sturdy Hiking Boots with good grip, as the volcanic rock is loose and uneven. Bring a Light Jacket – temps can drop quickly at higher elevations. Plus water, snacks, and of course marshmallows if your guide doesn’t provide them.
    • 〄 Prepare for Dust & Heat: The trail can be dusty and dry, so a buff or bandana helps keep. Sunscreen and a hat are also a must.
    • 🐴 Hire a Walking Stick or Horse: At the trailhead near the ticket office, locals rent out wooden walking sticks for extra cost. These can make the steep climb easier. Horses are also available if you prefer to ride part of the way.
    • ⛑️ Safety First: You’re not allowed to hike Pacaya Volcano without a guide because the terrain is unpredictable and volcanic activity changes regularly.
    • 💰 Cash Only: Entrance fees, snacks, and stick rentals are all cash only transactions. Bring small bills in Guatemalan quetzals.

Best Time to Hike Pacaya Volcano

Guatemala has two main seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the rainy season (May to October).

    • ☀️ Dry Season is the most popular time to visit Pacaya thanks to clear skies, warm days, and better visibility of the surrounding volcanoes. Trails are dry and easier to hike, making the ascent less slippery. Since this is peak tourist season, expect more crowds and higher prices for tours.
    • 🌦️ Rainy Season is not uncommon to see afternoon showers, especially June through September. Morning hikes are recommended. While trails can be muddy and slick, its lush landscapes and fewer tourists. Cloud cover is more likely.

Final Thoughts of the Pacaya Volcano Hike

Is the Volcán Pacaya hike worth it? Honestly, if you only have 3 or 4 days in Antigua I would not hike Pacaya Volcano but instead opt for the Overnight Actenengo Hike.

The Pacaya hike felt like a huge tourist trap and a little absurd to spend about $50 per person to hike up a volcano for an hour and a half. That price also doesn’t reflect if you want to ride a horse up or eat a pizza cooked over lava that is two meters below the lava rock.

If you wanted to do both of those experiences it would cost an extra $75 if you split the pizza with someone else. That being said, I understand that some people aren’t as into the strenuous hikes as I am.

Meaning, the Acatenango hike is a lot more difficult than Pacaya Volcano hike. So if hiking a volcano is a top priority on your trip to Guatemala, then the Pacaya Trail is your best option since it can be done in a half day and you have the option of a horse transporting you to the top.

I will add that I lived on Maui for over 12 years so hiking in a volcano and through lava fields is not a foreign adventure to me so my opinion may be a little jaded.

Plus we tried to hike this Pacaya trail independently so after the hike ended we were basically stranded for over a hour waiting for the chicken bus. Thankfully an uber accepted our request just before we started hoofing it to the chicken bus.

I know this may not be the most positive post but I pride myself on being honest and always staying true to things that only align with my values. I wanted to share my honest opinion, so if this helps at least one person out, my job here is done.
