Belizean cuisine is a flavorful blend of various cultural influences, including Maya, Garifuna, Mestizo, and Creole traditions. Here are ten traditional dishes that showcase the rich culinary diversity of Belize.

  • Rice and Beans with Stew Chicken: A staple of Belizean cuisine, this dish features red kidney beans and rice cooked in coconut milk, accompanied by a savory stewed chicken.
  • Fry Jacks: Deep-fried dough pockets that are often served with beans, eggs, cheese, or other savory or sweet fillings, making them a popular breakfast item.
  • Conch Soup: Conch shells, a marine mollusk, is used to prepare a flavorful and hearty soup.
  • Lobster: I’m assuming most of us are familiar with lobster, but in Caye Caulker its bountiful and relatively cheap.
  • Garnaches: A popular street food, garnaches are small corn tortillas topped with refried beans, cabbage, cheese, and sometimes meat.
  • Escabeche: Pickled onion dish often served as a condiment alongside meats.
  • Belizean Tamales: Tamales in Belize are often made with seasoned corn dough, filled with various ingredients such as chicken, pork, or beans, and then wrapped in plantain leaves before being steamed.
  • Belizean Johnny Cakes: These fried dough cakes are a popular side dish, often enjoyed with breakfast or as an accompaniment to stews or soups.
  • Fish: It’s no surprise fish is popular in most of Belize. In Caye Caulker you’ll find lots of snappers and Spanish mackerals.
  • Hudut: A traditional Garifuna dish, hudut is a fish soup made with coconut milk, served with mashed plantains and often accompanied by a side of fish.

Basically choose between fresh fish, chicken, pork, lobster or steak and then pick a style – flavorful jerk, Thai, kebabs etc. served with rice and salad. They have an extensive menu but the prices are fair, the portions are nice and quality is spot on.
