About St. Naum Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Naum is one of the most important and beloved cultural landmarks in North Macedonia. It sits about 18 miles (30 kilometers) south of Ohrid, perched on a high rocky cliff overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Ohrid, near the boarder with Albania.

The monastery was founded in the 9th century by St. Naum of Ohrid, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius – the brothers who created the Glagolitic alphabet, the foundation of the Cyrillic script still used across much of Eastern Europe today.

St. Naum devoted his life to spreading Christianity and education throughout the region, and after his death is 910 AD, the monastery became a place of pilgrimage. His tomb lies inside the church, where visitors can still feel an aura of peace.

Locals even say that if you press your ear to his stone coffin, you can hear the “beating heart of the saint.” Beyond its spiritual importance, St. Naum Monastery is admired for its Byzantine-style frescoes, Ottoman architecture, and the tranquil gardens that surround it.

The grounds are home to colorful peacocks, ancient trees, and panoramic lake views of the lake and mountains – making it as much a retreat for nature lovers as it is for history enthusiasts.
