Are These Things to do in North Macedonia Worth It?

From the serene shores of Lake Ohrid to the peaks of Mavrovo National Park, the country offers a mix of cultural charm and outdoor adventure that feels refreshingly authentic. About North Macedonia

Officially known as the Republic of North Macedonia, this small, landlocked country is bordered by Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Serbia – making it an ideal stop on any Balkan itinerary.

Despite its modest size, North Macedonia is packed with diversity: ancient lakeside towns, rugged mountain escapes, ancient monasteries, and lively cities filled with culture and charm.

You can hike through pristine national parks in the morning, wander through Ottoman-era bazaars in the afternoon, and sip local wine at sunset overlooking a tranquil lake.

With its warm hospitality, affordability, and rich mix of influences from East and West, North Macedonia is a destination that rewards travelers seeking authenticity and adventure in equal measure.

Skopje & the Old Bazaar

Starting off our best things to do in North Macedonia list is Skopje and it’s Old Bazaar. No trip to this Balkan country is complete without exploring Skopje, the country’s quirky and fascinating capital of North Macedonia.

It’s a city where ancient history and modern ambition collide – sometimes literally – creating one of the most unique cityscapes in the Balkans. Walking through Skopje feels like stepping between worlds: you can admire Ottoman-era mosques in one moment, then cross the Stone Bridge into a city center filled with neoclassical facades, massive statues, and glitzy fountains.

Love it or find it a little over the top, Skopje’s personality is undeniable – and it’s impossible not to be intrigued. The real heart of the city lies in the Old Bazaar, one of the oldest and best preserved bazaars in the Balkans.

Its narrow cobblestone lanes are filled with the aroma of fresh coffee, sizzling kebabs, and the hum of everyday life. Here you’ll find traditional crafts shops, silver jewelry makers, Turkish delights, and cozy teahouses tucked behind arched doorways.

You can hike up Mount Vodno to the Millennium Cross or take the Millennium Cross Cable Car for a quick and scenic ride. Don’t miss the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and Kapan Han, a former Ottoman inn that now hosts cafes and art galleries.

As the day winds down, cross back over the Stone Bridge for sunset views from the Skopje’s Kale Fortress, or grab a bite along the Vardar River to watch the city lights reflect on the water.

Skopje is far more than a capital stopover – it’s a city with layers, contrasts, and a charm that reveals itself the longer you stay. It’s where Macedonian history, culture, and identity intertwine, making it a perfect starting point for any North Macedonian adventure.

Explore Lake Ohrid & Old Town

If there’s one place that captures the spirit of North Macedonia, it’s Lake Ohrid. Straddling the border with Albania, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, dating back to more than three million years.

The town of Ohrid is a delightful blend of history, charm, and laid-back lakeside living. Wander through its cobblestone streets lined with whitewashed houses and red-tiled roofs, step into centuries-old churches, and soak up panoramic views from the hilltop Samuel’s Fortress.

Ohrid is often called the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” thanks to its impressive number of churches – legend says there were once 365, one for each day of the year. The famous, St. John’s at Kaneo, perched dramatically above the lake, is one of the most photographed spots in the entire country, especially at sunset.

Church of Kaneo Jovan

Beyond its spiritual and historical depth, Ohrid has a modern side. The Old Bazaar buzzes with cafés, restaurants, and local boutiques selling handmade jewelry and wood carvings.

In the summer, the Ohrid Summer Festival fills the streets with music, art, and dance, while the lake itself becomes a playground for swimming, kayaking, and boating. Whether you’re unwinding at a waterfront cafe or taking a scenic boat trip, visiting Lake Ohrid is one of the best things to do in North Macedonia.

Matka Canyon in North Macedonia

Kayak or Boat Through Matka Canyon

Just a short drive from Skopje, Matka Canyon is one of the best things to see in North Macedonia in terms of natural wonders. Towering limestone cliffs rise above emerald-green waters, creating a scene that feels like it belongs in a fairytale.

The best way to experience it? By kayak or boat. Paddle your way through the narrow canyon, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and hidden monasteries tucked into the cliffs.

You can also take a scenic boat ride to the Verlo Cave, one of the world’s deepest underwater caves. Afterward, relax at one of the lakeside cafes with a cold drink and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Eat Traditional Macedonian Food

One of the best things to do in North Macedonia. and ways to experience it is through its food – a delicious reflection of its Balkan, Mediterranean, and Ottoman influences. Meals here are hearty, flavorful, and always shared.

You’ll find slow-cooked stews, wood-fire bread, and generous portions of grilled meats served alongside fresh salads and local wine. Don’t miss tavče gravče, the national dish made of baked beans and spices, or ajvar, a smokey red pepper spread that’s perfect with everything.

Other must-tries include shopska salad (my personal favorite), kebapi, and burek, a flaky pastry stuffed with cheese or meat. Pair your meal with a glass of rakija, the local fruit brandy, and you’ll quickly see that Macedonian cuisine isn’t just about the flavors – it’s about community, conversation, and slowing down to savor every bite.

Im Jess Traveling in Galicica National Park

Drive the Galicica National Park Scenic Route

For some of the most jaw-dropping views in North Macedonia, take a drive through Galicica National Park, a stunning mountain range that stretches between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa.

The winding road through the park climbs high above both lakes, offering panoramic vistas that seem to go on forever. Along the way, you’ll pass alpine meadows, wildflowers, and quiet picnic spots perfect for soaking up the scenery.

Stop at Magaro Peak for a short hike to one of the park’s best viewpoints – from the summit, you can see both lakes shimmering below on a clear day.

Whether you’re road tripping between Ohrid and Bitola or just chasing incredible photo ops, driving the Galicica National Park scenic route is one of the best things to do in North Macedonia.

Villa Dihova & Pelister National Park

Tucked in the foothills of Pelister National Park, just outside the charming city of Bitola, you’ll find Villa Dihovo – one of the most beloved hidden gems in North Macedonia. This rustic, family-run guesthouse feels more like staying with family than at a hotel.

The owners welcome you with homemade wine, hearty traditional meals, and stories about life in the Macedonian countryside. The best part? There’s no set price – you simply pay what you think your stay and meals are worth, a tradition that embodies the warmth and generosity of Macedonian hospitality.

Surrounded by orchards, gardens, and mountain views, Villa Dihovo is the perfect place to unwind and experience local life at a slower pace. This was Joe and I’s favorite stay during our travels through North Macedonia.

🗺️ Travel Tip: The trails inside Pelister National Park are incredibly scenic but not always well-marked. Before setting out, stop at Hotel Molika, located inside the park, to grab a trail map and local hiking information.

Mavrovo National Park

Hike Mavrovo National Park

Mavrovo National Park is the county’s largest national park one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations. Stretching across rugged mountains, deep canyons, and alpine meadows, the park is a paradise for hikes and nature lovers.

At its heart lies Mavrovo Lake, an emerald reservoir surrounded by forested hills and charming mountain villages. One of the park’s most unique sights is the partially submerged Church of St. Nicholas, which peeks out from the lake’s surface – a haunting yet beautiful reminder of the area’s history.

Hiking trails weave through the park, offering routes for every skill level. Adventurous trekkers can tackle Mount Korab, the highest peak in North Macedonia standing at 9,068 feet, while casual hikers can enjoy paths through pine forests or along the lakeshore.

If you’re visiting in the winter, you can hit the slopes at Mavrovo Ski Resort. With its mix of dramatic landscapes, cultural charm, and quiet mountain air, Mavrovo National Park perfectly captures the raw, untamed side of North Macedonia’s natural beauty.

The complex is surrounded by lush gardens and peacocks that roam freely, adding to its peaceful charm. Inside, you’ll find colorful frescoes and the tomb of St. Naum, which locals believe has healing powers.

Bay of the Bones Museum

Bay of the Bones

Just a short drive north of St. Naum along the shores of Lake Ohrid, you’ll find one of North Macedonia’s most fascinating archaeological sites – the Bay of the Bones. This open-air museum is a meticulous reconstruction of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement that once stood here more than 3,000 years ago.

Built on wooden silts over the lake, the site gives visitors a glimpse into how people lived during the Bronze And Iron Ages. Stroll along the wooden walkways connecting the thatched huts, explore the small museum filled with ancient artifacts, and take in the stunning views of the lake’s glassy waters and surrounding mountains.

Local wines in Turkey

Sip Local Wines in the Tikveš Wine Region

North Macedonia Travel Tips

Before you pack your bags, here are a few essential travel tips for visiting North Macedonia to help make your trip smooth, affordable, and unforgettable.

💰Currency & Costs: The local currency is the Macedonian Denar (MKD), and while credit cards are accepted in most cities and hotels, it’s a good idea to carry some cash for smaller towns, markets, and rural guesthouses. North Macedonia is one of the most budget-friendly destinations in Europe, with affordable meals, accommodations, and transportation.

🗣️ Language: The official language is Macedonian, but many people – especially younger locals and those in the tourism industry – speak some English. Learning a few basic phrases like “Blagodaram” (thank you) goes a long way and is always appreciated.

🚗 Getting Around: Public transportation is available, but renting a car gives you the most flexibility to explore places like Mavrovo National Park, Galicica, and remote mountain villages. Roads are generally in good condition, though mountain routes can be winding and narrow – take your time and enjoy the views.

Views of Ohrid

📅 Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit North Macedonia is May through September, when the weather is warm, ideal for hiking, swimming, and exploring. Spring and early autumn are particularly beautiful, with fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures.

🍽️ Food & Drink: Don’t rush your meals – dining in North Macedonia is a social experience.

🙏 Culture & Etiquette: Macedonians are warm, hospitable people who value politeness and genuine conversation. Always greet with a smile, and if invited into someone’s home, it’s customary to bring a small gift, like sweets or wine.

📶 Wi-fi is widely available in cities, cafes, and hotels, but coverage can be spotty in remote areas. Getting a eSIM card with data is inexpensive and convenient for road trips. It’s easy to download and install, then voila, you have cell service in North Macedonia.

🥾 Bonus Tip: While North Macedonia is safe and welcoming, trail signage in national parks can be unclear, so always bring a map, download a map offline, or have GPS, especially when hiking in Pelister or Mavrovo.
