Where to stay in Don Det.  In the far south of Laos near the Cambodian border sits the Si Phan Don archipelago, or commonly known as the 4000 Islands. The four thousand islands are a series of islands, islets and sandbars in the middle of the Mekong River.

Most of the islands are uninhibited and covered during monsoon season but there are a few islands that draw the adventurous traveler in.  The main islands that travelers stay are Don Det, Don Khong and Don Khon.

In this guide we’ll go over where to stay in Don Det but I’ll also cover where to stay in Don Khong and where to stay in Don Khon in case you want to base yourself off one of those islands.

If you traveled through Laos like we did you’ll stumble off the overnight bus in Pakse blurry eyed only to catch another 2 and a half hour bus to Nakasong where you’ll then catch a small boat to Don Det, the main stay for travelers exploring this area.

Don Det is a backpackers paradise.  A place to kick back and unplug, which is the main reason I eneded up here during my travels through Laos.

Simple wooden bungalows line the riverside of Don Det.  There are two parts of the island to stay on when exploring Don Det.

The sunrise or sunset side of the island.  The boat will drop you off on the sunset side of the island and if you walk about 20 minutes down the only dirt/muddy road to get to the sunrise side.

These are the best places to stay on Don Det.
