Chances are, your first taste of Peru will be in the capital itself as most international flights fly into Lima before connecting you to other destinations in the country.  Although commonly skipped on someones Peru itinerary, I wouldn’t miss at least spending a few days in this sprawling metropolis.

Lima is full of museums, an entrancing coastline and most importantly – the food scene!   Whether you’re on a backpacker budget or have a bit to splurge, there is an accommodation in Lima perfect for your travel style.

Besides the tourist Mecca of Cusco, Lima is the second most expensive destination in Peru.  Prices still reasonable though, especially if you are coming from the United States or Western Europe.

The Best Area to Stay in Lima

There are basically two neighborhoods in Lima that travelers favor.  Those neighborhoods are trendy Miraflores and seaside Barranco.  Two other Lima Peru neighborhoods are San Isidro and Central Lima which may be good options for you depending on your budget.

Miraflores is the most popular and best part of Lima to stay in.  This neighborhood is full of hostels, inns and upscale hotels.  Not only are most of the hotels and hostels located in this area, but it is one of the safest neighborhoods in Lima.

The neighborhood sits on top of cliffs that overlook the ocean.  There are countless things to do in Miraflores and it has pedestrian friendly streets.

If you’d rather be closer to the ocean for some beachside action during the day, opt for staying in Barranco.  This area is riddled with restaurants and trendy clubs.  Once a summer resort for the wealthy elite, old mansions have been converted into all types of accommodations at various different price ranges.

San Isidro is the financial hub of Lima and to stay here you’ll need to have the money to prove it.  This area is more upscale and will cost a pretty penny.

Central Lima is where you’ll find some of the best places to stay in Lima on a budget.  This area is a bit removed from Miraflores and Barranco which contain all the hottest clubs and restaurants.

This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site which contains the main square, Cathedral and Government Palace.  Central Lima is about a half hour taxi ride from Jorge Chavez International Airport.
