About the Great Blue Hole
Where is the Great Blue Hole in Belize? The Great Blue Hole of Belize is world famous, located off the coast of Belize. This massive underwater sinkhole measures over 1,000 feet across and plunges more than 400 feet deep.
Formed during the last Ice Age (about 150,000 years ago), when rising sea levels flooded a system of limestone caves, the Blue Hole is now a perfectly round circle of deep sapphire water surrounding by coral reefs.
It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, the second largest barrier reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Blue Hole was made popular by the French explorer Jacques-Yves Coustea who declared it “one of the top ten dive sites in the world.” It’s famous among divers but it’s equally jaw-dropping from above.
How to Book a Scenic Flight Over the Great Blue Hole, Belize
Booking a flight over the Great Blue Hole is super easy, with a handful of reputable tour companies offering daily departures on various days of the week – depending on departure location and airline.
Great Blue Hole Belize Tours leave from Caye Caulker, San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), and Belize City, each with small airports where tour operators run flights on 6-12 passenger planes.
There are two companies that operate Great Blue Hole Tours – Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Both are well-established Belizean airlines with excellent safety records. Flights last about an hour, circling the Blue Hole multiple times from different angles so everyone gets a chance at that perfect photo.
The scenic Blue Hole flight will also fly over other stunning spots in the Belize Barrier Reef, including Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Atoll, and even a shipwreck, making it a truly unforgettable aerial tour.
Planes are small, so each passenger is guaranteed a window seat. You can even book the co-pilot seat for more money. It’s smart to book at least a few days in advance during peak season (December – April), as flights sell out quickly.
🐬 Summer Time: During the summer if you look closely you can see manatees in the water and you can see rays, sharks, dolphins and other wildlife year round.
Great Blue Hole Belize Tours
While a scenic flight gives you the most dramatic perspective of the Great Blue hole, there are also boat tours that let you experience the natural wonder up close. Great Blue Hole Tours depart from Caye Caulker, San Pedro (Ambergris Caye), or Belize City.
Divers descend into the Blue Hole itself, while snorkelers often stick to the rim where colorful corals and marine life thrive. The boat excursions are long (2-3 hours each way), but they give you a completely different appreciation of the Blue Hole”s scale.

My Great Blue Hole by Plane Experience
Taking a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole in Belize has been on my travel bucket list for years. And when we decided to spend 2 weeks exploring Caye Caulker, I just knew we had to take flight.
Everywhere is pretty walkable on Caye Caulker so you can walk to the airport which takes about 15 minutes from town or you can ride a bicycle or golf cart to get there. The airport is small, but clean and has air conditioning.
We personally flew on Tropic Air and our tickets cost $260 per person. We checked in and waiting patiently full of excitement. We were the first ones in line and we chose to sit in the back of the plane.
Our plane had 10 seats + the pilot and co-pilot seats. This ensured that everybody had a window seat and uninterrupted views. This also made it a more intimate experience.
The plane ride takes you over dreamy Caribbean waters, tiny cayes, and the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, the longest Barrier Reef in the western hemisphere. Finally, we reach the star of the show – the Great Blue Hole of Belize. The first glimpse was jaw dropping.
The pilot circled the Great Blue Hole multiple times, from both directions, making sure both sides of the plane had a clear look down into the deep sapphire circle framed by coral reef. So you’re guaranteed unobstructed views.
The ride was smooth, but small planes can get bumpy on windy days. We even flew over a shipwreck on a small Caye on the way home. By the time we landed, we understood why it’s one of the top things to do in Belize.
If you’re not on a strict budget, I absolutely recommend taking a scenic flight tour over the Great Blue Hole in Belize. It was scenic, intimate, and worth the splurge.
📸 Photography Tips: Make sure your camera or phone is fully charged, bring a lens cloth for window glare, and wear darker clothing to cut down on reflections.
Big Blue Hole Belize Scenic Flight Tips
- ⏰ Book in Advance during high season. Flights often sell out quickly between December and April. If you are traveling during the slower rainy season, you’ll have an easier time finding last minute deals.
- Wear Dark Clothing. Light colors shirts reflect in the windows, which can ruin photos. Dark colored clothing reduces glare and gives you cleaner shots.
- 📷 Bring the Right Gear. Wide-angled lens for cameras and shoot on 0.5x if using an iPhone.
- 🛩️ Small planes can get bumpy in windy weather.
- ⛅️ Check the Weather. Clear skies and calm winds make the views unforgettable.
